Why Smooth Threads Are Becoming The Latest Trend
While aging is a natural process, not everyone embraces the fine lines and wrinkles, loss of volume, and sagging skin that can come along with it. Fortunately, treatments for these issues continue to become more effective and accessible. Some people turn to Botox and other injectable fillers, but there is a new revolutionary treatment that offers improvement in skin tone and firmness by encouraging your body’s own cellular renewal. Minimally invasive and nearly painless, smooth threads are quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in non-surgical facelifts.
What Are Smooth Threads?
Smooth threads are made of absorbable surgical polydioxanone (PDO) and are inserted below the skin, virtually anywhere on the body. The structure of the thread lifts and tightens sagging skin, giving the appearance of youthful plumpness. The act of placing the thread “tricks” the body into thinking it has been injured, stimulating healing agents like collagen to the site.
What Is The Procedure Like?
One of the major advantages of PDO smooth threads is that they are so versatile. Here are just some of the areas that can benefit from a smooth thread procedure:
- Forehead or brow lift
- Nasolabial folds (lines that run from the nose to the corner of the mouth)
- Under the eyes
- Crow’s feet
- Upper and lower cheeks
- Neck
- Jawline
- Marionette lines (lines around the mouth)
- Arms
- Abdomen
- Buttocks
Regardless of the treatment area, the procedure is basically the same. After cleaning the skin, we use a small needle to insert a one inch long PDO thread under the skin. You’ll feel a tiny pinch from the needle, but it’s a quick procedure. In our office, we offer local anesthesia for ultimate comfort upon request. Afterwards, there can be a feeling of tightness or light swelling which should subside in a few days. You are free to return to your normal routine right after the procedure.
When Should I See Results?
After your procedure, you might notice an immediate lifted appearance depending on where the threads are placed. While you may not see very dramatic results right away, in about 4 weeks you should start to see smoothing and tightening. As your body continues heal at the site of the threads, the tone and texture of your skin improve even further. The thread itself eventually dissolves (in about 6 months), but changes in appearance last longer because of the new elastin and collagen your body generated. Results typically peak around 4-6 months and can be noticeable well over 12 months.
