The time it takes to perform the surgery is based on the individual patient and her needs. Most procedures take one to two hours.
Patients often have labiaplasty in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as perineoplasty or clitoral hood reduction.
Depending on the individual patient, the surgery can be performed with either local or general anesthesia.
A local anesthesia is administered prior to the procedure to ensure comfort and then mild sedation or general anesthesia is required. You should not feel any pain during the procedure. After surgery, any pain or discomfort you may experience will be controlled through pain medication and will usually not be needed after the first 3 to 4 days. Ice packs applied to the area for the first 24 hours helps with any pain and swelling.
Most patients return to work within 2 to 4 days for labiaplasty procedures and may require up to one week off with vaginoplasty or with multiple procedures.
Depending on the extent of the surgery, vigorous exercise is limited as well as heavy lifting and sexual intercourse. At the two week postoperative visit we can determine continued limitations. It may require up to six weeks of recovery before sexual intercourse for most procedures.
Other than no intercourse for three days, there are not any restrictions after treatments.
